2002-03-08 - 2:51 p.m. A DIFFERENT OFFICIAL TURNER PRIZE (News) This is the Henry C. Turner Prize for Innovation in Construction Technology, which has just been announced by the National Building Museum and Turner Construction Company in Washington D.C.. The prize of $25,000 for notable advances and high achievement in the process of construction will be given on 6 May to Leslie E. Robertson, P.E., F.ASCE. The press release states: "His path-breaking 50-year career as a structural designer has significantly advanced the engineering and construction of tall buildings around the world. He has been responsible for the structural design and construction of three of the world's six tallest buildings, including the World Trade Center." Apparently his "groundbreaking" structural designs include "the first use of prefabricated multiple-column and spandrel-wall panels to resist the lateral force from hurricane winds and to allow column-free interior space (World Trade Center, New York, circa 1972)". (Wasn't the lack of internal supporting columns somewhat contributory to the building's collapse? Oh well.) More on: http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/020308/nyf004_1.html
