EKOW ESHUN NOMINATES STUCKISM FOR TURNER PRIZE

Ekow Eshun, editor of Arena magazine and on the Newsnight panel, suggests on the BBC web site that the Stuckists should win the Turner Prize for demonstrating against it:

Shock Tactics

There's an inverse rule when it comes to the Turner Prize that the greater the degree of attention an artist receives, the less likely they are to win.

Damien Hirst was the bookie's favourite in 1992 when he discovered the joy of pickling sharks, but he didn't actually win until three years later. Tracey Emin's dishevelled bed made her into a household name in 1999 but it was Steve McQueen's reworking of an old Buster Keaton gag that took the prize.

Indeed, if scandal equated directly to success then this year's winners should probably be the Stuckists, the ragged band of artist malcontents who've turned their annual placard-waving anti-Turner protest outside the Tate into a kind of art event of their own that now generates press attention from around the world.
